Things to Watch Out For in 007

Written on 11:02 AM by Unknown

I wish my readers A Very Happy New Year 2007. May all of you have a good and prosperous new year, and may you be able to fulfill all your resolutions. I wasn't able to fulfill mine for 2006, so I'm carrying it over to 2007 (cant tell you, you'll laugh at it...)

Wishes over, lets check out some things we can look forward to in 2007:

Windows Vista
The latest OS from Microsoft finds itself on top of wazzhot's watchlist because the home edition will hit the market in January. Microsoft knows how to be on top, even if it means topping the chronological order!

The $100 Laptop
Yes, that is right. A laptop costing 100 bucks! The initiative was launched at the MIT Media Lab. Biggies like Google and AMD are working with MIT. The current plan is to produce 100 to 150 million units by 2007.

SED TV
The next generation TV marries the slim profile of LCD TVs with the brightness, clarity and response time of traditional colour TVs. The stage is set for some high definition TV viewing.

The iPhone
Sounds too good to be true. Though Apple never committed to it in 2006, well informed rumours kept telling us: its on its way, its on its way...". A wild predicition will never make you look like a fool I guess!

Harry Potter 5th Movie
The 5th Harry Potter movie - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; is on its way with a new scriptwriter and a new director. OF course, the main cast is still the same, with the ever attractive Emma Watson playing the not too attractive Hermione's character. Its slated for release in July 2007.

Harry Potter 7th Book
J.K. Rowling recently released the title of the 7th Harry Potter book - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; giving fuel to the speculation that it could be published any time in 2007. Trusted sources predict that it might be in the market towards the end of 2007.

A Microsoft-Yahoo-AOL Merger
Speculations are rife in the web world about a possible merger between Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL to take on the internet behemoth Google. Such an alliance could possibly break the monopoly enjoyed by Google in the various services in blogosphere and Web 2.0.

Security Flaws in Windows Vista

Written on 12:11 PM by Unknown

Serious flaws were found in Microsoft's latest operating system offering Windows Vista which was released to corporate customers late last month, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Among the flaws - one discovered by a Russian programmer allows hackers to increase a user’s privileges on all of the company’s recent operating systems, including Vista. Another major flaw was found by the Silicon Valley firm Determina in the new Internet Explorer 7, which could be a gateway for infecting user machines with malware if they visit certain sites.

Determina also discovered a bug that would make it possible for an attacker to repeatedly disable a Microsoft Exchange mail server simply by sending the program an infected e-mail message.

Microsoft said that it was investigating the threats but found so far that a hacker must already have access to the vulnerable computer in order to execute an attack.

With few days left for the much touted Operating Sytem's launch, it will be a worrying trend for Microsoft if more such vulnerabilities are discovered too soon. Here's hoping that Vista turns out better than its hackers think.

Harassed by Friend Requests from Strangers?

Many of us are hooked on to the social networking websites like Myspace, Orkut and hi5. While these help us catch up with old friends and make newer ones, there is another more annoying aspect - unknown people sending you friend requests without any rhyme or reason.

Women are especially harassed by net stalkers who keep bugging them on the internet with friend requests. If you have a beautiful pic on your profile page, you are bound to be flooded with hundreds of friend requests from the romeos of the cyberworld.

The above picture is my orkut homepage, where I have 4 new friend requests from people I hardly know...there were 7 requests in fact, of which 3 I denied before the idea of showing it to my readers struck me. Though I'm a guy, I'm a very reserved person...and enjoy my small cirlce of friends. I dont really mind making friends on the net, but at leastt there should be some commnication before...instead of suddenly sending a friend request!

Harry Potter Book 7 Title Finally Out...!

Written on 4:39 AM by Unknown

There is a title for the 7th and final book in the beloved Harry Potter series : "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Author J.K. Rowling's U.S. publisher, Scholastic Inc., released a brief statement announcing the name of the world's most anticipated children's book, the finale to her phenomenally popular series.

A publication date has not yet been set for the book, which will follow Harry and friends during their final year at Hogwarts, the school for witches and wizards. Rowling is still working on the book, she explained on her Web site on Thursday.

The first six books in the Potter series have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide and been translated into 63 languages, making Rowling Britain's highest-earning woman.

"I'm now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more," she wrote. "I don't think anyone who has not been in a similar situation can possibly know how this feels: I am alternately elated and overwrought. I both want, and don't want, to finish this book (don't worry, I will.)"

She then described her odd dreams about Harry's world, which Potter fans are sure to scour for clues about what may happen in the final book.

"For years now, people have asked me whether I ever dream that I
am 'in' Harry's world," Rowling wrote.

"The answer was 'no' until a few nights ago, when I had an epic dream in which I was, simultaneously, Harry and the narrator."

Rowling said she recently went on a day trip to the film studios where she saw 20 minutes of footage for the 5th HP film - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, "which looks fantastic".

Microsoft: Windows Vista still Requires Antivrus

Written on 9:51 AM by Unknown

Windows Vista does require antivirus software after all, Windows chief Jim Allchin wrote on a company blog (windowsvistablog.com).

“I want to be clear, most users will use some form of antivirus software, and that will be appropriate for their scenarios,”
Allchin wrote.

The co-president of platform and services responded to media reports recently that quoted him as saying that the forthcoming operating system didn’t need any antivirus software because of it’s enhanced security. Allchin countered that the remarks were taken out of context.

“I made a comment about how attacks on the Internet are getting more and more sophisticated, and some of the security features in Windows Vista really help our customers. This somehow morphed into people thinking I said customers shouldn’t use antivirus software with Windows Vista.”

The intended point, said Allchin, was that in certain situations, Vista would provide much better security for users.

The initial reports stemmed from a comment Allchin made during a conference call recently, when the company announced that Windows Vista had been released to manufacturing and would be launched on 30 January.

“Even if there is a remote exploit on one machine, and a worm tries to jump from one machine to another, the probability of that actually succeeding is very small. My seven year-old runs Windows Vista and, honestly, he doesn’t have an antivirus system on his machine,” Allchin was quoted as saying.

Allston was talking about his home computer, on which his seven-year-old son runs a Vista machine without antivirus software.

Allchin also said that the machine used strict parental controls that limited access. Allchin recommends that users do have antivirus software on their Vista machines, and that the example he listed was an extreme and very specific situation.

UK Bowled over By Gadgets

Consumers in the UK will buy about 30 million electrical and electronic items over the coming six months, according to the Energy Saving Trust (EST).

Its research shows many Britons regard items such as cordless phones and electric toothbrushes as "essential".

Electrical consumption by consumer gadgets is expected almost to double over the next five years.

The trust is calling for gadgets to carry labels warning shoppers how much they will cost to run.It believes labelling might persuade shoppers either to buy less or to choose more energy-efficient models.

This increase in electricity consumption would result in greater carbon dioxide emissions

Research carried out for the trust suggests Britons are increasingly regarding electrical and electronic items as indispensable.

Two-thirds of people planning to purchase a cordless phone said it was an "essential item", while a half of those intending to buy an electric toothbrush said the same.

The British Gadget Shopping List

Over the next six months, Britons intend to buy:
digital cameras - 2.5 million
mobile phones - 2.5 million
televisions - 2.25 million
computers - 1.75 million
cordless phones - 1.25 million
DVD players/recorders - 1.25 million
microwave ovens - 1.25 million
mp3 players - 1.25 million
electric kettles - 1.25 million

Harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which has been directed by David Yates is slated to be released in February 2007. The scriptwriter for the film is Michael Goldenberg, having replaced Steve Kloves, who wrote the screenplays for the first four films.

As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from...

Wikia - the creators of the Wikipidea (the largest free online encyclopedia for the uninitiated) have recently launched a free web hosting package with unlimited bandwidth and connectivity. In fact, the platform will provide free storage, bandwidth, software and computing power. It is a totally ad free open source program and you can even combine your adsense account with it to generate 100% revenue for yourself! The service, tentatively titled OpenServing is a big boon for those with low budget and high ambitions.

As you can see from the demo, the layout is quite similar to digg, with all the users writing articles and voting for their favorites.

I have already registered myself for a blog site there. However, it is not fully available yet. You might see the following message on the site, " Openserving will go live shortly." But its better to register as early as possible so that you can book your preffered domain name.

Stare at the white dot in the center of the red circle. The longer you stare - the better (at least 90 seconds and you’ll get a much stronger effect). Try to keep focused on the white dot. Trust me, it will be worth the effort.

Soon after, you will start to see a thin rim of light around the edge. Don’t stop staring yet! Wait another minute - keeping your head perfectly still.

Once you’ve done this, move your head very slowly backwards; making sure to keep your eyes focused on the dot at all times. The circle’s rim will glow brilliantly with true Cyan! Keep on moving your head slowly backwards, and witness the amazing eclipse of the red planet.

Google Begins Radio Ad Testing

Written on 6:43 AM by Unknown

Google has started testing a long awaited radio advertising service that represents the internet search leader's most elaborate attempt yet at expanding its financial clout beyond the web.

The test announced on Thursday will help sell advertising on more than 700 radio stations in more than 200 US metropolitan markets. Google hopes to eventually sign up more than 5000 stations, according to documents shown to potential advertisers.

Thursday's announcement didn't specify how many advertisers are involved in the early radio tests nor set a timetable for opening the service to all comers.

Google is betting its technology can do for radio what it has already done for the Internet by automating the process for selling and distributing ads to an audience where the messages are most likely to pique consumer interest. As it does on the Web, Google plans to charge a commission for helping radio stations sell ads.

The Mountain View-based company signaled its intention to expand into radio advertising in January with a $102 million acquisition of dMarc Broadcasting Inc. Since then, Google has been working to make the service compatible with a system that already serves millions of Internet advertisers.

Samsung has broken the record for the world's thinnest mobile LCD display, clocking in a mere 1.23mm, which is 0.07mm than LG and Philips LCD's combined effort.
This new super slim display is available in 2.1" and 2.2" screen sizes and boasts QVGA 240 x 320 pixels resolution, a brightness level of 300 nits, and a contrast ratio of 500 to 1. Samsung's new mobile technology, i-Lens, also allows the integration of the entire panel assembly into a single module that is more robust and clearer than conventional panels. It is widely believed that mass production will begin in Q3 2007 onwards.

To see which celeberity you resemble, log on to myheritage.com - a really cool site, where you can also trace your family tree by just putting in your surname! I tried for myself but couldn't do it as it requires Java (runs a Java applet), and there's something wrong with my computer's Java. I'm quite satisfied though, I resemble:

- a big country's president (China- Hu Jintao)

-a hollywood director (M Night Shaymlan)

-a nobel winning author (V.S Naipaul)

-a football champ (Ronaldo!)

-a real hottie (jessica simpson!!)

The Best Antivirus Program

1

Written on 1:11 PM by Unknown

I have always wondered which is the best antivirus program for a Windows PC. Different magazines give different rankings and reviews to antivirus software of different companies. In fact, while consumerresearch.com gives the thumbs up to McAfee this year, there are many others who feel that McAfee is too lacking in features.

I personally use a Trend Micro Pc-cillin Internet Security Suite 2005, which has been working quite well for me...in fact much better than my Previous choice - Norton Antivirus 2003, which slowed down my computer to death. Every later version of Norton that I tried actually ate up more of my PC's RAM. So finally I gave up on it.

However, we must remember that the only constant is change. And after I checked the latest antivirus review by experts, I really want to try out Kaspersky. Check out this review:

"Despite a very competitive antivirus landscape, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6, released earlier this year, still stands heads and shoulders above the latest Norton and McAfee products and thus deserves our Editors' Choice for antivirus protection."

The best features of Kaspersky were listed as follows:
  • Virus Definitions Updated - Hourly (as compared to daily by PC-cillin & McAfee)
  • P2P File Sharing Protection - The only antivirus program other than Bitdefender to currently provide for P2P file sharing protection. So no need to be scared from viruses coming from limewire!
  • Scanning time on 80 GB HardDrive - 8 mins!! This is perhaps the best feature of Kaspersky. Compare this to others; McAfee - 1 hour, Norton - 35 mins, NOD32 - 24 mins.
With all these awesome features, Kaspersky was bound to win that award. However, I might still stick with my PC Cillin as yet. Its been doing a pretty good job and its suiting my PC (doesn't eat up too much of my RAM!) Mayabe in future I'd like to check it out - but who knows, it might be someone else on top in 2007...

This transparent TV brought to you by Sony again proves that Sony Corp can still manufacture innovative products. Now you see quite clearly the transparent speakers along side this sexy television...but they do seem too big for the television. You will need quite some space to place this beauty in your living room.

They seem to be using a projector at the back of the transparent material (glass ?) to display the image. The screen resolution looks awesome . Aaah, and what could the price be? Sony has not disclosed it yet, but I'm sure it wont burn a hole in your pocket, it will burn your hole trousers!

Hi! In my first post here, I would like to to tell all about this blog. But first, something about myself. I am Sarthak from India. I am a very highly opinionated person, have opinions on anything and everything. Out of such a mindset arose a desire to pen down my opinions, or rather reviews, of anything and everything under the sun. This is the result, the baby that has been born out of 9 months of contemplation! Ok here's a quick FAQ for whatever you would like to know about this blog:

Uhh, whats with the title?

Ahem..! You mean Wazzhot, I guess. Well in this age of short cuts, short skirts, short forms, short undies....alrite enough! Let me get to the point. Part of the selfish with words internet lingo of today, wazzhot - stands for whats hot? (as you aleready might have guessed..u geek!)

So What.......?

So...mmm, I'l try to post here things that are in vogue...or should be in vogue. things that are hot, things that you should try, things that you will enjoy...

Interesting...What exactly are these things?

You dirty mind!...well these things could be anything including websites, films, music, products, gadgets, software, OS....u name it!

Lousy Joke. But y the hell should I read you???

Good point! Well frankly, I have no answer to that. Its entirely up to you...Just like for reviewing a product, I'll have to try it, n test it...so u can do with this blog. Hope I pass in your test!

No more questions? Well looks like you're content right now. But if you do think of any questions later, you can always post a comment here. And I would love to respond. Alright, ciao!
