Harry a History

Written on 3:47 PM by Unknown

While browsing the net, I casually spotted a book called Harry, A History - and as I read further about it I came to know that it was written by Melissa Anelli - the webmsitress of The Leaky Cauldron - one of the most popular Harry Potter fan sites in the world!

Harry a History

Well, another icing on the cake was that the book had a foreword by J.K. Rowling! The piece focuses on how J.K. Rowling "finally cracked," she said, in 2002, and "Googled Harry Potter."

"I had already heard of 'The Leaky Cauldron'; it was one of the biggest and most popular Harry Potter sites on the net, and I had been told about a couple of great things they had done....But I had never seen it for myself, never realised exactly what went on there. I sat and read editorials, predictions, theories that ranged from strange to wild to perfectly accurate. I was, frankly, stunned
- and I remain stunned."

The article also points out how J.K. Rowling says in the foreword that the book has filled in "an enormous number of blanks," and that:

"At long last I understand what was going on while I was holed up writing, trying to filter my exposure to Potter-hysteria...a great chunk of my own life has been explained to me. Melissa has filled in an enormous number of blanks. Reading the book you now have in your hands has been an astonishing experience for me. It is as though I have, at last, achieved the ambition I held for years: To go along to a bookshop at midnight on Harry Potter publication night, in disguise, and simply watch and listen."

Well well, today I just got a copy of the book in my mailbox. Having read the first 2 chapters, I can say that anelli doesn't really have Rowling's falir with the pen, but I am definitely hooked!

You can order the book from Amazon or maybe get one at your local bookstore. Below are amazon links:

Daniel, Rupert and Emma Interview

2

Written on 5:01 PM by Unknown

In the latest issue of Teen magazine, Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson spoke about their characters' romances in Half-Blood Prince in a new interview, which can be read below:

Daniel spoke about kissing Bonnie, teasing Rupert, and on-set shenanigans:

Dan Spills!
What's the kissing scene like between Harry and Ginny Weasley?
I think Bonnie (Wright, who plays Ginny) was maybe a bit nervous, and I probably was, too. It is very much the case that it's nowhere near as exciting to film those scenes as people would imagine them to be. I hateto disillusion everyone.

Did you give Rupert any advice on his kissing scenes?
I wasn't there because they filmed the actual kiss after I had gone home one day. I couldn't watch it and laugh at him, which was deeply annoying. I love watching the scenes where Lavender swoons over Ron. I think there's a little bit of Rupert looking embarrassed, which makes me really laugh.

Is it fun filming a movie that has a little more romance in it?
I prefer the dark stuff to be honest! The romance is fun and it's something people will really enjoy, but I personally like doing stuff in a cave where I'm close to death. It's a lot easier than romance.

What was a funny moment onset?
Rupert, Emma and I displayed a total lack of professionalism because we could not stop laughing during one scene, and we didn't know why. I think it was partially because I had just seen a piece of film footage of a monkey in a little uniform riding a bicycle and I was thinking about that. I shared that with Rupert, which was a terrible thing to do because he started laughing. And then I think Emma just though, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

Rupert Dishes!
We heard you checked out the top five actresses who auditioned to play Lavender Brown. What was that like?
(Laughs) Yeah, I went to some of the final stages of the auditions. It was really cool to be involved in that side of it, not that I really had any say. There were some good girls, but we didn't do the kiss. We didn't even talk about the kiss until the day we actually did it. But Jessie (Cave), who got the part of Lavender, is really cool. Potions are a big part of the story.

How were you at chemistry in real life?
I quite enjoyed it- the stuff with the Bunsen burners.- but I never went to school much because I did most of my learning onset. We didn't do many experiments, so I missed out on that.Rumor is there's a lot of Ping-Pong played on set and Emma is the one to beat!I don't like playing her because it's really embarrassing. She's so much better than me and Dan, but we're getting good. We're quite quick!

Emma's scoop!
You'll have your first Harry Potter kiss in the seventh movie. How do you feel about that?

I think it's going to be quite awkward, but I was speaking to Dan and Bonnie, and apparently, after a couple of takes it gets boring!

Do you ever work with the costume department on choosing Hermione's clothes?
Yeah. As I've gotten older, I've been more involved. In the beginning, I found it really hard to understand that I was wearing clothes people expected Hermione to wear. I was 10 at the time and I'd get really upset about the clothes because I never would have worn anything like that in my life! I've been playing her for so long now that I can have more fun with it.

What's your secret to being the onset Ping-Pong champ?
My parents played and they're really competitive. They never user to let me win, but I got quite good at it. Dan and Rupert were quite taken aback that I could beat them. I think Rupert took it the worst.

As expected, Yahoo has responded to Microsoft's 3 week deadline this morning. The bottom line is pretty clear in a letter signed by Jerry Yang (CEO) and Roy Bostock (chairman).

In the "Dear Steve" response to Ballmer they state, "we will not allow you or anyone else to acquire the company for anything less than its full value." They go on to state that, "We consider your threat to commence an unsolicited offer and proxy contest to displace our independent Board members to be counterproductive and inconsistent with your stated objective of a friendly transaction."

Apparently, Yahoo seems to be heading towards Google for support, and we might see its best engineers working for the Big G soon enough.

Tata Buys Jaguar and Land Rover

0

Written on 3:57 PM by Unknown

Car giant Ford has sold its luxury UK-based car brands Jaguar and Land Rover to Indian company Tata. Tata, India's biggest vehicle maker, is paying $2.3bn (£1.15bn) for the British brands after months of negotiations over price and supply relationships.

The deal is another sign of the growing economic muscle of India and something of an economic role reversal, with two icons of British industrial might expanding the global reach of a premier conglomerate in the former British colony.

Ford nets about $1.7 billion, a far cry from what it paid for the properties -- $2.5 billion for Jaguar in 1989 and $2.7 billion for Land Rover in 2000. Counting losses and product development, analysts figure Ford spent more than $10 billion on the brands.

Those acquisitions, like General Motors' purchase of Saab and Chrysler's entanglement with Mitsubishi, came when cash was rolling in at the U.S. automakers as drivers snapped up cars and pricey pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Jaguar and Land Rover employ about 16,000 staff at UK plants in the West Midlands and Merseyside. Although Land Rover remains profitable, Ford has never managed to make money from its investment in Jaguar.

The Tata Group has been at the forefront of corporate India’s outbound acquisitions with the latest being Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford for 2.3 billion dollars.

A look at the significant acquisitions by the TATA Group

  • 2000- Tata Tea acquires the Tetley Group, UK. This is the first major acquisition of an international brand by an Indian business group worth 275 million pound.
  • 2004- Tata Motors buys the heavy vehicles unit of Daewoo Motors, South Korea for about 102 million dollars.
  • 2005- Tata Steel snapped up Singapore-based steel company NatSteel by subscribing to 100 per cent equity of its subsidiary, NatSteel Asia and spent 486 million dollars on the deal.
  • 2005- Tata through VSNL take overs Tyco Global Network for 130 million dollars, making it one of the world's largest providers of submarine cable bandwidth.
  • 2006- Tata Coffee acquires US-based Eight O'Clock Coffee for for 220 million dollars.
  • 2007- Tata Steel buys Corus for a whopping 12.2 billion dollars.
  • 2008-Tata makes Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford a part of its empire for 2.3 billion dollars.
Tata is India's oldest and largest conglomerate, with holdings in steel, information technology and auto. Tata Motors is the automobile arm of the company. It should have the cash to save Jaguar and Land Rover and develop new products to better compete with luxury automakers.

Hosting Recommended By Kaushal Sheth

Renowned web designer Kaushal Sheth, who is especially famous for his wordpress themes, recently listed his favourite web hosting services on his blog. Having tried various web hosting companies to host my websites on, I quite agreed with the necessity of his post.

For newbies to website hosting, here's a small intro - Web hosting is a service that allows users to post Web pages to the Internet. A web host, or hosting service provider, is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for Web sites to be viewed on the Web.

How to choose good web host? A good, shared Web host must provide reliable and reasonable quality of service. Many times, a consumer will sign up with the least expensive provider only to experience many technical difficulties and the inevitable and frustrating experience of a change in web hosting.

To avoid this experience, it is best if the consumer chooses the right web hosting company. Ensuring that a shared Web hosting firm has the following characteristics will increase the probability of consumer satisfaction.

Final Harry Potter Movie Split in Two

0

Written on 2:09 PM by Unknown

The 7th and final Harry Potter book will be adapted for the silver screen in two parts, Warner Bros has confirmed. The announcement comes after producer David Heyman admitted it was impossible to cram Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows into a single movie.

Fans of the series have been left disappointed in the past when key scenes, including Quidditch matches, were excised for the film adaptations. Because of the many adventures in "Deathly Hallows," Rowling, the movies' producers and Warner Bros. all agreed that two movies were necessary to truly tell the end story.

Part one of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will debut in late 2010 and be followed months later by part two.

"We feel that the best way to do the book, and its many fans, justice is to expand the screen adaptation of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' and release the film in two parts,"
Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said in a statement. The Kill Bill strategy will also have the benefit of boosting profits at the film studio.

The first five Harry Potter movies have made $4.5 billion (£2.2 billion) worldwide - making it the biggest film franchise in box office history, surpassing both James Bond and Star Wars.

Filming for the sixth chapter in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, began in September last year.

It is being directed by David Yates, who will also helm the final two films.

"I consider it a great privilege to continue to bring Jo's extraordinary world to the screen, and to be the director to complete this epic and exhilarating journey,"
he said.

"Harry Potter" represents a $20 billion business, so an eighth film will likely only expand the enterprise.

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, and his co-stars Emma Watson (Hermione) and Rupert Grint (Ron) are now filming the sixth movie -- "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." All three have said they would appear in "Deathly Hallows."

iphone 2.0 to be revolutionized by SDK

0

Written on 12:38 PM by Unknown

Apple will release a major update to its iPhone software this June, , including new features for businesses and broad support for third-party software.

Apple has revolutionized the capabilities of its iPhone, as it tries to appeal to gamers and businessmen alike, however users of the phone will have to wait until June before they can start benefiting.

Announcing the launch of its Software Developers Kit (SDK) at its town hall event in at its headquarters in California, the newly announced SDK will allow developers the chance to use the same APIs and tools that Apple says it uses in-house to develop iPhone applications.

The announcement is likely to cause an avalanche of new applications for users of the mobile phone. The company takes cues from both the business and consumer worlds, finally letting third-party developers in on the action to bring games, utilities, and other apps to the phone.

These impending changes promise to radically transform the daily experience for iPhone users.

The iPhone 2.0 update will include an iTunes App Store utility. Tap it, and you'll see a library of downloadable titles. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has indicated that, while the purpose of the App Store will be to sell software for the iPhone, many of these apps will most likely be free. Of course, that depends entirely on what developers decide to do.

The iPhone SDK will give developers access to most aspects of the device, from the touch screen to the camera to the accelerometer that is responsible for sensing when you tilt the device.

In fact, application developers have already announced grand plans. After studying Apple's newly released SDK docs for 24 hours, Sun decided it was feasible to develop a JVM, based on Java Micro Edition, for both the iPhone and the iTouch. Gameloft said it will develop more than 15 game titles for Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone in 2008.

Applications developed for the iPhone will be distributed through Apple's AppStore and loaded onto the iPhone through the company's iTunes software. Apple will charge developers $99 to publish applications and take a further 30% of the revenue, however Apple has said there will be no charge for applications that are offered for free to end users.

The iphone 2.0 will be available as a free software update to existing iphone users on its release in June.

Be Invisible in Gmail Chat

Written on 11:31 AM by Unknown

Gmail Chat added a new status option: invisible. Now you can be logged in to Gmail Chat and see if your contacts are online, but they won't be able to see you're online. I think its a long awaited feature!

If you simultaneously use Gmail Chat and any other flavor of Google Talk (the gadget or the desktop application), you won't be able to change your status to invisible because they don't support the new feature yet.

The feature was first added to Gmail Chat because it's the most used interface for Google Talk, but it's unpardonable to have three separate interfaces with different features.

Abu Dhabi to Get Futuristic Green City

0

Written on 2:27 PM by Unknown

Abu Dhabi has started to build what it says is the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste car-free city.

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co., also known as Masdar, will spend $22 billion developing the carbon- neutral city that will save the equivalent of $2 billion in oil usage over 25 years. The green city will use 75 percent less power than a conventional city, and less than half the amount of desalinated water.

There is also a financial payoff. Masdar fits neatly into Abu Dhabi's efforts to diversify from dwindling oil wealth. Its developers say that it will create 70,000 new jobs and boost the UAE's GDP by 2 per cent.

The project is unquestionably ambitious and forward looking not only in scope but also in the goals it is trying to achieve. Surely, Abu Dhabi has set a precedent and the pace on a regional and international level.

Tired of Facebook Apps Invites - Here's the Solution

One of the major complaints about Facebook is the Application Request Queue that keeps getting longer and longer unless your religiously hit the "Ignore" button each time there’s a request from a friend to add a new Facebook application.

At the time of writing, there were some 320 invitations in my Facebook Inbox for various Facebook Applications and clearing this queue would have taken days as I would press the Ignore button exactly 320 times.

Fortunately, there’s an excellent solution available now in the form of a bookmarklet for IE and Firefox that will completely erase all Facebook application requests in one click.

Go to http://www.ignoreall.com/, bookmark the bookmarklet and click on it on your Facebook request page. It works like HarryPotter's magic.

This simple Javascript removes only the Facebook Apps requests - if you have any pending friend requests or group invitations, they’ll stay unaffected.

Store Yahoo Messenger Webcam Streams on Your Hard Drive

The YCC Cam Cap application allows you to automatically save both inbound and outbound Yahoo! Messenger webcam streams to an AVI file.

YCC Cam Cap performs this by taking individual screenshots of the Yahoo! Messenger webcam control and saving them into a video file on your hard drive. YCC Cam Cap is not selective in the webcam streams it captures but saves any webcam control located on the desktop.

This process is carried out automatically behind the scenes so that when a new webcam window is opened, a new file is created and when a webcam window is closed the file is finalized. As long as you have a powerful enough machine, YCC Cam Cap is capable of saving an almost unlimited number of webcam windows at the same time and in real time.

But yeah, I know what youre thinking. It could be a boon for internet perverts as well! Oh well, when will they ever grow up!

Facebook Out to Clean Your Profile

Facebook is planning an early spring! The social networking site which famously opened its gates to developer applications in May '07, announced that it will soon be starting a way for app-happy Facebookers to keep up appearances by relegating many of their widgets to an "extended profile." By clicking the button, you will be able to hide everything except Facebook's own applications and a number of others, and a "Show Extended Profile" button will reveal the entire thing to you or your friends.

All Facebook noted that this may mean bad news for developers who've created little-known Facebook applications and are counting on viral buzz to grow their products. If those applications are rendered invisible by "extended profile" controls, that viral expansion could be stalled.

Aside from that, I think the "profile cleanup" is a great idea. One of my female friends' profile page is cluterred with 300 applications and its an onerous task waiting for the page to load (it even looks quite ugly with vampires and werevolves staring at you!) to write on her wall.

However, there are some applications like iread and superwall, which really add depth to a facebook profile and I feel it would be a raw deal for the developers of those applications.
